How To Avoid Tailgating Accidents
It is necessary to maintain a generous distance – about the distance your vehicle would travel in three seconds – between your car and the vehicle in front of you. For example, if the vehicle in front passes a telephone pole, you should pass it about three seconds later. If you need to brake quickly, this allows you the time and distance to bring your vehicle to a stop.
However, keep in mind that three seconds is the minimum distance when weather conditions are good and during daylight hours. If there is bad weather, the road is slick, or during the evening hours, the stopping distance should be increased to four or five seconds. It’s best to err on the side of caution. There is never a good reason to engage in aggressive driving behavior, including tailgating another vehicle.
If, on the other hand, you are being tailgated by another driver, drive defensively. It may be tempting to “warn” the driver behind you by tapping on the brakes, but if that driver isn’t paying attention, you could wind up in a crash. You may also be tempted to speed up to get that driver off your tail, but speeding carries its own set of risks.
Instead, continue to drive at a safe, consistent speed, keep your cool, and avoid confrontations. Maintain slightly more distance than you normally would between you and the driver ahead of you to compensate for the driver who is tailgating you. Should the car ahead of you brake quickly, you can come to a stop gradually, in the hopes that the tailgating driver won’t rear-end you. If possible, pull over to the side of the road or turn into a side street and allow the tailgater pass. The most important thing is to keep yourself and your passengers safe.
