Birth Control Implants – Bradenton Product Liability Attorneys
March 7, 2016Since 2002, the Essure birth control implant has been promoted as a simple way to prevent pregnancy without going on hormonal birth control. The small metal spring is implanted in the fallopian tubes, thus preventing an egg from passing through. The device is a physical barrier and contains no hormones. Though this device sounds streamlined and un-intrusive in theory, the Essure birth control implant has in fact caused many women to suffer debilitating side effects. Jodat Law Group cares deeply for situations in which individuals were injured as the result of a product itself. Our Bradenton Product Liability Attorneys can help.
How Essure Has Harmed Women
Essure is considered a permanent form of birth control: A doctor inserts the flexible metal coils into one or both fallopian tubes, and over the course of a few months, tissue grows around it, holding it firmly in place. This creates a barrier that blocks any eggs from passing into the uterus. Although many women have benefitted from this birth control device, many others have reported a wide range of complications. Some of these complications are an inconvenience, but others rise to the level of a medical emergency. These include:
- Device incompatibility – nickel used in the device may cause allergic reactions in some women
- Intense abdominal pain (this is the most commonly reported side effect)
- Headache and fatigue
- Device migration (when the implant moves from where it was inserted)
- Heavy bleeding
- Depression
Sadly, four women died after having Essure implanted. The FDA does not formally link their deaths to the use of the device, but nevertheless notes that after using the implant, these women suffered from infection, uterine perforation, embolism, and depression, all of which led to death. Unfortunately, once the device is implanted, it is difficult to remove – and doing so can involve its own medical complications.
It seems Essure’s manufacturer, Bayer, may not have taken the necessary precautions to ensure that they were providing patients with a safe product when they failed to perform adequate follow-up research when women began making complaints.
Drug companies have a responsibility to conduct transparent clinical trials and do everything in their power to make sure they are not providing patients with dangerous products. They cannot be allowed to put financial gains above customers’ safety. The FDA recently decided to maintain Essure approved status, but the agency will continue to monitor the long-term effects of the implant.
