Beware of Nursing Home Abuse Amid Coronavirus
April 17, 2020Jodat Law Group explains why it’s more important than ever to stay in contact with your loved ones in nursing homes during the Coronavirus lockdown.
Nursing Home Abuse May Be On the Rise
The coronavirus, otherwise referred to as Covid-19, has been taking a major toll on our daily lives. Older people are regarded as the most vulnerable to the harmful consequences of the novel virus. Due to this danger, nursing homes and assisted living facilities have gone into total lockdown to keep anyone from the outside bringing the coronavirus in and infecting the elderly. Though the lockdown is preventative, there may also be a negative implication of this measure: the elderly are not in as close of contact with their family and friends, and are not having daily visits at all.
There are some reports in the press coming out that nursing home abuse may be on the rise in some assisted living facilities. With the elderly occupants not being checked by family regularly, the reports suggest that the employees or caregivers in some facilities are not treating the residents or patients properly.
Nursing Home Abuse Could Lead to Infection
A form of nursing home abuse, known as neglect, could possibly lead to the the risk of Coronavirus infection for occupants and patients in assisted living facilities. When nurses or caregivers don’t properly wash their patients, or sanitize the rooms, there is a heightened risk of infection. This can lead to infection of staff as well.
Another factor is the lower number of employees currently working at some facilities. With less help to care for the patients, some may be neglected and given less attention, therefore leading to potential medical issues as well.
Get Justice and Compensation For Your Loved Ones
When a nursing home or assisted living facility acts negligently and causes harm to its patients, there may be damages that can be recovered by an experienced and trusted attorney. Witnesses, video recordings, and medical records can aid in proving that the nursing home is guilty of negligence. Contact your local attorney if you believe you may have a case.
