Administrative Assistant’s Day History
Also known as Secretaries Day or Admin Day, Administrative Assistant’s Day is not a public holiday, but rather, an observance celebrated on a Wednesday during the last full week of April. The observance honors secretaries, administrative assistants, receptionists, accountants, and other administrative professional support team members. On this observance, the administrative professionals generally as a form of respect and appreciation receive cards, flowers, chocolates, lunches, snacks, extended-lunch periods, and potentially pay increases.
Administrative Assistant’s Day has in the past been criticized for being too forward or over-the-top, pointing out that the in-office professionals have a specific role that is much different than the rest of the business. This has often left the staff members feeling like the “support team”, even though the point of the observance was to celebrate them. The term Administrative Professional has changed vastly over time, which often leaves the staff personally evaluating their position as it relates to an administrative role.
Other criticisms include the alleged creation of the holiday to boost sales for other surrounding holidays, such as Easter and Mother’s Day. The gifts such as flowers and cards have also portrayed the observance as a feminine-centered one.
